If your roof needs repairs done or is damaged to the point of requiring total replacement, then you must find a reliable roofing contractor. It’s imperative that you do because you don’t want to encounter more trouble down the line than with what you started. However, the question is, how exactly do you find a reliable roofing contractor? With so many contractors bidding for your business, how can you be sure that you’re choosing the right one? Fortunately, it’s not as difficult as it may seem.
You must, however, know what to look for in a contractor. The essential qualities of a roofing contractor are:
1. They Are Local
When searching for a roofing contractor, you’ll rarely need to search outside your area, city or state. You can expect to encounter a number of roofing contractors saying that they serve your area, but you need to verify such claims.
The reason why you’ll want to go for a local contractor is that they are likely a legitimate business that has an actual office in or around your town or city. This also means that they are familiar with local roofing regulations and standards. Additionally, there’s very little chance the contractor would cheat or do anything that could compromise their reputation as doing so would be hamper their business prospects.
2. They Are Insured
Another essential quality of a reliable roofing contractor is having insurance coverage. Insurance protects you from liabilities that may arise during the course of the project. This includes non-payment of wages and damage to property. Therefore, you need to make sure that your choice of contractor has both general liability and workers’ compensation insurance.
3.They Are Licensed
You also need to make sure that the roofing contractor you work with has the required permits and licenses to operate in your area. These credentials are proof that the contractor has met standards set by your local government and is knowledgeable about applicable building codes in your area.
4.They Are Recommended
One of the best ways to find a reliable contractor is to obtain referrals from friends, family or those you trust to give you good recommendations. However, in the event that they can’t provide you with one, you’ll need to find recommendations from industry experts or organizations instead. These include the Better Business Bureau® (BBB). If the contractor has an excellent BBB rating, for instance, this means that they are performing exceedingly well and that they’ll be a great choice for your roofing project.
Another way you can find out if a particular roofing contractor is reliable is to ask for work references. If they have clients that are willing to recommend them, then this is a good sign that they’ll do a good job for you. However, don’t just take their word. Obtain a list of these clients, and actually give them a call to find out if the contractor is indeed as reliable as they claim.
5.They Are Manufacturer-Certified
Last, but not the least, you must work with a contractor that is certified. Reliable roofing contractors will be certified by at least one manufacturer to work on their products. Manufacturers will often invalidate warranties when they find out that their product was not installed by one of their certified contractors, leading to roofing issues. This could be a big blow in case you need to actually take advantage of a warranty. To avoid complications, make sure that the roofing contractor you choose is certified by the manufacturer of the products you want to use on your roof.
Another reason to make sure that your contractor has manufacturer certifications is that roofing materials are not created equal. More often than not, each manufacturer has their own set of specifications for their products. Therefore, if a contractor doesn’t have the right certifications, then there’s a chance that they aren’t familiar with how specific roofing products are to be used or installed. As such, there’s also a chance that they might make a grave mistake that could cost you a significant amount of money in the end to fix.
Finding a reliable roofing contractor isn’t as difficult as you might think it would be. Yes, you do have to put in some work in the selection process, but you’ll find that it’s well worth the effort when you’re enjoying the results of your successful roofing project. Make sure these essentials are present in your contractor of choice, and you can’t go wrong.
